Food for thought  17th July 10.....

We do not see things as they are.... We see things as we are

Just Joking

One balmy day in the South Pacific, a navy ship espied smoke coming from one of three huts on an uncharted island. Upon arriving at the shore they were met by a shipwreck survivor. He said, "I'm so glad you're here! I've been alone on this island for more than five years!"
The captain replied, "If you're all alone on the island why do I see THREE huts."
The survivor said, "Oh. Well, I live in one, and go to church in another."
"What about the THIRD hut?" asked the captain.
"That's where I USED to go to church."

The Lord is saying. Keep walking... don't be discouraged. The enemy of your soul wants you to give up or slow down. But I say renew your vigour and walk on with your flags flying. Victory is imminent!!!! and a new vision just around the corner where you will be able to see more clearly.

15th July 10.

The Lord is saying: I am with you. Pick up the feeble knees and the drooping hands. Nothing has changed, I am still working to bring all that I have promised to pass. Do not throw away your confidence but walk upon the promises that I have given you. My word shall not fail.

Excerpt from Shirley's diary
October 16th 2006

Little Darma the dog last night was in fear because she could hear fireworks outside. Somewhere in her background she had been put in a compound and been exposed to some noise that frightened all the dogs, but they couldn't get round to sedating them all because there were too many of them. She was without her family and probably locked in a small kennel, subjected to tremendous fear.

Although she was safe at home last night with absolutely no threat of the fireworks hurting her, her irrational fear caused her much disturbance. Likewise, when we have been subjected to a harrowing experience, because at that point it looked like God had forsaken us, that His love had failed us and that His safety was not covering us, if we then gave in to the temptation to believe that, then the enemy had a way in because of the lie. We believed a lie. Darma believed that her life was at stake because of the noise. Therefore every time she hears fireworks she believes her life is at stake.

What if….. Can God heals us from the what ifs…..? If Darma got healed she would be able not only to feel safe in the house when the fireworks are banging but also to go out there in confidence that they would not hurt her. She would need some exposure to the truth to see that if kept a safe distance from, the fireworks would not hurt her. Yet she could enjoy the pretty colours and exciting displays, etc. The truth always sets free.

Therefore we need to understand and know that when we went through terrible circumstances in our lives when we felt afraid and hurt and alone, when we sinned, God's love had not failed us, He had not left us and He was still protecting us. At that point we may have needed wisdom and we certainly needed faith to believe in God's love, but His hand had not left us. Where our faith failed, the enemy came in with a lie, because our shield was down. This lie has to be substituted with the truth once and for all, so we can confidently go and be all God wants us to be.

But what if…. Well what if…. What if the dog bites us…. What if the firework hits us… what if we lose our job. We are more than conquerors through Christ who loves us. He turns all things round to our good. When we get on the battleground we find we always have the victory. When we face that which we fear we find that there is no sting in it at all, only victory. Death has lost its sting.

Beetroot juice 'boosts stamina'
and reduces blood pressure

Nitrates seem to be the key ingredient in beetroot.
Drinking beetroot juice boosts stamina and could help people exercise for up to 16% longer, a UK study suggests.
A University of Exeter team found nitrate contained in the vegetable leads to a reduction in oxygen uptake - making exercise less tiring.
The small Journal of Applied Physiology study suggests the effect is greater than that which can be achieved by regular training.

"We were amazed by the effects of beetroot juice"
Professor Andy Jones
University of Exeter

The researchers believe their findings could help people with cardiovascular, respiratory or metabolic diseases - and endurance athletes.
They focused on eight men aged 19-38, who were given 500ml per day of organic beetroot juice for six consecutive days before completing a series of tests, involving cycling on an exercise bike.
On another occasion, they were given a placebo of blackcurrant cordial for six consecutive days before completing the same cycling tests.
After drinking beetroot juice the group was able to cycle for an average of 11.25 minutes - 92 seconds longer than when they were given the placebo.
This would translate into an approximate 2% reduction in the time taken to cover a set distance.

Root vegetable, and potential lifesaver?
Drinking 500ml of beetroot juice a day can significantly reduce blood pressure, UK research suggests.
The key beneficial ingredient appears to be nitrate, which is also found in green, leafy vegetables.

The researchers found that in healthy volunteers blood pressure was reduced within an hour of drinking the juice.

The study, by Barts and the London School of Medicine and the Peninsula Medical School, could suggest a low-cost way to treat hypertension.

"Drinking beetroot juice, or consuming other nitrate-rich vegetables, might be a simple way to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system"
Professor Amrita Ahluwalia
Barts and The London School of Medicine

Previously the protective effects of vegetable-rich diets have been attributed to their antioxidant vitamin content.

While it took less than an hour to note a reduction in blood pressure in the beetroot juice tests, it was more pronounced after three to four hours and a degree of reduction continued to be observed for up to 24 hours, the report published on the online journal Hypertension said.

REFLECTIONS - A Moment of Time

Here, neither fluctuating nor deviating,
yet intent on relinquishing to your future spasm of time.
A moment of truth, a moment of lie
A moment of love or one of hate,
Neither intruding on our will
Nor extinguishing our thought,
Yet here for us to use for good or ill,

Aware of your awesome presence, yet you escape,
and then ......the next, never to be experienced in a lifetime again.
How were you used you moment of a moment ago?
How tiny you seem
but yet how overpoweringly
awe inspiring.

How quiet you are in stillness,
But where can we find you in the tumultuous cacophony of sound?
With how much respect are you treated in a world
so frighteningly divesting herself of such
a necessary commodity?

To kill or heal to maim or bless?
You, moment of a life, do you feel sadness or joy?
Or are you just here?
Neither taking from the last nor giving to the next.
You exist, uniquely embodied in a terrible power.

Are you the last moment of my time?
Do you know how many of you are allotted to me?
Do you know when to stop for me?

Unlike the butterfly caught in the net you are free
....never to be trapped.
You, moment of ecstasy or joy, grief or pain,
you flee, gone forever,
You, moment of a moment ago
to whom do you flee?
Where is your home?
Where do you go?

You, moment of time
your existence is shrouded in veils
of mystery, how beautiful,
how terrifying, how sure.

Friend or foe, or are you just here,
touch-typing the clouds
in the valleys of space
as we dream on?
Some of us searching and wishing
for more of your sweetness,
others eager to bid you farewell.

Catherine O'Halloran.
